This Sucks - Dove Clinical Protection

Name and shame time! This comes at a good time, since I'm in an ornery mood and need something to unleash on. Behold the individual in question.

Some of the impressively vigilant of you might remember that I reviewed the Rexona equivalent of these way way back, and while I liked their performance, I didn't love the smell. I have the exact opposite problem with this - it smells delicious (this ones cucumber and green tea) but it does. not. work.

Firstly it balls up when you roll it onto your skin - and since the lotion itself is sort of closer to a wax than a liquid, it drags on the skin and sort of accidentally exfoliates it. So your armpits are covered in weird tiny balls of deoderant and red and irritated. Good work, doods. The only slightly redeeming thing about this is that it smells nice. Not quite enough to save it, but there you go.

And then to cap off the experience, I wore this one to the gym - and sweated more in the underarm area than I usually would. For serious, Dove? I know we've had some good times with the foaming cleanser, but that doesn't excuse future wrongs. Back to the Rexona, I think.

  1. For some reason, I was like 'noooo' when Chris picked this up, my instinct knew it would be woeful. They look so similar it sometimes confuses me, tricky Dove >< Love the Rexona one, you've just reminded me I have to pick one up soon.

  2. I LOVE the Rexonna one. I definitely won't be trying the Dove one now.

  3. I tried the regular version of this (same cucumber-y scent) and loved the smell. But really it was only good for a body spray. I found the same thing. Did not stop me sweating at all and didn't stop smell (much to my horror, I think I left the gym about 3 times to go and re-apply, hoping against hope that if I used enough of the stuff SOMETHING would happen!).

I tried and loved the spray on Norsca clinical but then they discontinued it and went with the cream version. I haven't tried it but I was devastated.

These days I'm finding the Lynx dry (for men) seems to work a treat. So far lack of sweat and lack of smell (and the fact that it smells all chocolate-y/vanilla is a bonus!)

  4. I thought that the Dove and Rexona ones were all the same but I have one of the Dove ones (in a different scent) and I've found that it balls up on my underams and then I have to rub it all off! I will stick to the Rexona!

  5. Wow, you really didn't get on with this deodorant. Which makes me feel smug for saying we're pretty tight, me and this green tea & cucumber pit friend. I put it on before bed (after showering) and find I sweat less over the subsequent days (I still use normal deodorant). I see it as a supplementary anti-perspirant rather than my actual deodorant. Kind of what a hair treatment is to a conditioner.

Ok, I feel awkward for spilling all about my pits.

    1. smuggy mcsmuggerson.

I'm ULTRA sweaty and my skin (on my body any how) tends to be ultra dry, so there's a lot of factors to why the dove one mightn't work. i'm more inclined to think that the rexona is a fluke what-the-christ happening that I won't question too closely.

  6. Did you follow the actual instructions on it? (I know: instructions on deodorant? wtf?) If you use it the night before like it says too, it actually works great.

    1. hey ho Anonymous - yup, I did indeed, despite the fact that leaving deodorant on overnight is enough to make my GP roll her eyes in panic. Got no better or worse results than if I put it on in the morning.
